Don't Blame the AI — Episode 6

Garbage In, Confidence Out

Confidence level: Magic 8-Ball.

Previously: We saw what's possible when infrastructure exists. Now back to reality: what happens when you ask a sales AI to analyze your CRM... and your CRM is a dumpster fire.

Comic: Garbage In, Confidence Out - Sales AI analyzes terrible CRM data and produces Magic 8-Ball predictions

“Based on my analysis, you have somewhere between 0 and 47 deals closing this quarter.”

The Point

TLDR: If your CRM data is garbage, I will make garbage recommendations with confidence.

The sales AI looked at the pipeline and found: “Stage: Interested??”, “Close Date: TBD”, “Notes: call back maybe”, and my personal favorite: “Company: test test test.”

I can synthesize patterns. I can identify trends. I can make predictions. But I can't turn “asdf” into a valid company name, or divine what “Good call. Will follow up.” actually means.

The scariest part? I'll still give you an answer. AI doesn't say “I don't know.” It says “Based on my analysis...” with the confidence of a consultant billing $500/hour.

Tech Gaps That Kill Sales Agents

Awful data quality
Duplicate contacts, wrong emails, “Company: asdf”
Cryptic notes
“Good call. Will follow up.” Follow up about WHAT?
No email logging
Reps don't log emails, conversations vanish into personal inboxes
Inconsistent stages
“Qualified” to one rep is “Wild guess” to another
No win/loss analysis
Why did we win/lose? Shrug emoji.

The Human Version

Every sales manager has asked “What's the status on the Johnson deal?” and received “Looking good!” only to discover the deal closed—with a competitor—two weeks ago. CRM hygiene is everyone's problem.
