First Launch Guide

Welcome to enTANGlement! This guide will walk you through your first time using the application.

First-time setup takes about 5 minutes. We'll guide you through accepting terms, setting up AI models, and creating your first knowledge base.

Step 1: Terms of Service

On first launch, you'll be presented with our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. These explain how enTANGlement handles your data (spoiler: everything stays on your device!).

Step 2: AI Model Setup

enTANGlement uses AI models to power search and chat features. You have two options:

  • Local AI (Recommended) - Uses Ollama to run models on your computer. Completely private.
  • Cloud AI (Pro) - Connect to Claude, OpenAI, or Grok for more powerful models.

Step 3: Install Ollama (If Local AI Selected)

If you chose Local AI, we'll help you install Ollama and download your first model. The setup wizard will:

  1. Check if Ollama is already installed
  2. Guide you through installation if needed
  3. Download the Mistral 7B model (about 4GB)
  4. Verify everything is working

Press Ctrl+K to quickly access your knowledge bases from anywhere in the app.

Creating Your First Knowledge Base

Option 1: Start from a Template

We offer pre-configured templates for common use cases:

  • Educational courses (High School, University)
  • Professional projects
  • Hobby collections (Recipes, Fitness, Finance)

Option 2: Create a Blank Knowledge Base

Start fresh with a custom knowledge base:

  1. Click "Create New" or press Ctrl+N
  2. Give it a name and description
  3. Choose a folder where documents will be stored
  4. Select an AI model for this knowledge base

Pro Tip: Each knowledge base can use a different AI model. Use faster models for quick searches and more powerful models for complex analysis.

Adding Your First Documents

Once you've created a knowledge base, it's time to add documents:

  1. Drag and Drop - Simply drag files onto the document area
  2. Browse - Click "Add Documents" to select files
  3. Auto-Watch - Documents added to the knowledge base folder are automatically imported

Supported Formats: PDF, Word (.docx), Text files (.txt, .md), and more coming soon!

Your First Search

With documents added, you can start searching:

  1. Navigate to your knowledge base
  2. Click the search bar or press /
  3. Type a natural language query like "What are the main points about climate change?"
  4. AI will search through your documents and provide relevant results

Starting an AI Chat

To chat about your documents:

  1. Select a knowledge base
  2. Click the chat icon or press C
  3. Ask questions about your documents
  4. AI will answer based on your document content

Privacy Note: When using local AI, your documents and conversations never leave your computer. With cloud AI (Pro), only your queries are sent to the provider, not your documents.

Customizing Your Experience

Theme & Appearance

Go to Settings → Appearance to customize:

  • Light/Dark/System theme
  • Accent colors
  • Font size and family
  • Accessibility options

Keyboard Shortcuts

Learn the keyboard shortcuts to work faster:

  • Ctrl+K - Open knowledge base drawer
  • Ctrl+N - Create new knowledge base
  • Ctrl+/ - Focus search
  • Ctrl+Shift+D - Toggle dark mode
